The Bible Story

Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah

Genesis 22:1-19 tells how God tested Abraham by telling him to take Isaac to the land of Moriah and offer him on a mountain God would show him. Abraham traveled with Isaac and two servants, carrying wood, fire, and a knife. At the place God named, Abraham built an altar, arranged the wood, bound Isaac, and placed him on it. As Abraham reached out his hand, the angel of the LORD called from heaven. The angel told Abraham not to lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him, and said that Abraham had shown he feared God by not withholding his son. Abraham then saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket and offered it instead of Isaac. The passage calls attention to God’s provision and records promises concerning Abraham’s offspring, victory over enemies, and blessing to all nations of the earth.
