A Promise for Abraham’s Family

Genesis 22:1-19

The Big Idea

God’s promise to Abraham included a family too many to count and blessing for all nations. The stars and sand help picture how great the promise was.

The Bible Story

Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah

Genesis 22:15-18 describes the angel of the LORD calling to Abraham again and conveying the LORD’s oath. Because Abraham obeyed and did not withhold his son, the LORD promised to greatly multiply Abraham’s offspring. They would be numerous like the stars of heaven and the sand on the seashore. The promise also included victory over their enemies and blessing for all nations of the earth through Abraham’s offspring. The passage presents these words as the LORD’s continuing promise concerning Abraham’s family. This scene focuses on the promise itself, represented by stars, sand, and the mountain. It does not explain later fulfillment, identify particular descendants, or add details beyond the passage.
