The Bible moment
Exodus 1:8–2:10 tells how the Israelites faced harsh, forced labor in Egypt. Pharaoh later ordered newborn Hebrew boys to be thrown into the Nile, placing Moses in serious danger. A Levite woman hid her baby for three months. Then she placed him in a papyrus basket coated with bitumen and pitch among the reeds along the Nile. Moses’s sister watched from a distance. Pharaoh’s daughter later found the basket, recognized Moses as a Hebrew child, and felt compassion for him. Moses’s sister helped arrange for a Hebrew woman to nurse him, and Moses’s mother cared for him. When Moses grew older, he was brought to Pharaoh’s daughter, who took him as her son and named him Moses because she drew him out of the water.
