God Looks at the Heart

1 Samuel 16:1-13

The Big Idea

People may notice what is easy to see, but the LORD sees the heart. We can ask God to help us value humility and faithfulness.

The Bible Story

David Is Anointed King

In 1 Samuel 16:1–13, the LORD sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse’s sons. When Samuel sees Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab, he thinks the LORD’s anointed is before him. But the LORD tells Samuel not to judge by Eliab’s appearance or height. People look at what is outward and visible, while the LORD looks at the heart. Jesse presents more sons, but the LORD chooses none of them. David, the youngest, is brought in from tending the sheep and is chosen. Samuel anoints him with oil among his brothers, and the LORD’s Spirit comes powerfully upon David from that day onward.

What children can notice

Samuel looks at Eliab, but the lesson is shown through Samuel’s thoughtful pause and a respectful visual contrast between outward appearance and the unseen heart. The concept communicates that humans often focus on what they can see, while the LORD looks at the heart.

Use this page

Use this page with 1 Samuel 16:6–7 when teaching about God’s choice and careful judgment. Invite children to distinguish between noticing appearance and deciding someone’s worth. Avoid suggesting that outward appearance never matters or that children can know another person’s heart. Keep the focus on the LORD’s understanding and David’s calling.
