The Bible Story

David Spares Saul

This scene comes from 1 Samuel 24:16-19, within the account of David sparing Saul. Saul had pursued David, but David refused to kill or injure him. David showed Saul the piece cut from his robe and explained that he had not rebelled or sought Saul’s harm. David asked the LORD to judge between them. Saul then acknowledged David’s righteousness and admitted that David had repaid evil with good. Saul also recognized that David could have killed him but did not. The passage presents David’s self-control, mercy toward an enemy, refusal of revenge, and respect for the LORD’s authority. Saul’s response should remain within what the passage records: he weeps, recognizes David’s goodness, and speaks about David’s future kingship. The scene does not include a conversion ceremony, a reconciliation ritual, or physical combat.
