The Bible Story

Elijah Is Fed by Ravens

In 1 Kings 17:14-16, Elijah tells the widow that the LORD promises her jar of flour will not become empty and her jug of oil will not run out until rain returns to the earth. The widow does what Elijah says. Elijah, the widow, her son, and her household have food for many days. The account follows Elijah’s time beside the Brook Cherith, where ravens bring him bread and meat. When the brook becomes dry because there has been no rain, the LORD sends Elijah to Zarephath. There, the widow has only a handful of flour and a little oil, but the LORD provides through the promise spoken by Elijah. The passage emphasizes God’s authority over drought and rain, obedience, and dependable provision. It also shows generosity and sharing despite scarcity, as the household makes food and receives what is needed according to the LORD’s word. The text does not give a precise number of days or describe what happens after rain returns.
