The Bible Story

The Widow’s Oil

This scene comes from 2 Kings 4:1–7, during a time of serious debt for an unnamed widow. Her deceased husband had served among the sons of the prophets. The creditor was coming to take her two sons as servants because of the debt. Elisha asked what he could do and what she had in her house. She answered that she had nothing except a jar of oil. Elisha then instructed her to borrow empty containers from her neighbors. She and her sons were to go inside, shut the door, and pour the oil into the containers. The oil continued until no containers remained. Elisha told her to sell the oil, pay the creditor, and live with her sons on what was left.
