The Bible Story

The Walls of Jericho Fall

Joshua 6:6-14 describes Joshua giving the LORD’s instructions to the priests and the people. The armed men, priests with trumpets, the ark, and the people of Israel proceed around Jericho as commanded. They circle the city once each day for six days, then return to their camp. Joshua tells the people not to shout or let their voices be heard until the appointed time. This scene belongs before the seventh day, when the people will circle the city seven times. The passage emphasizes following the LORD’s instructions carefully, even when the next step is not yet visible. The wall has not fallen in this scene, and the people have not yet shouted. The story later tells of Jericho’s fall and Rahab’s rescue, but those events should not be placed into this first-six-days image.
