The Bible Story

Isaac Is Born

Genesis 21:1–7 tells how the LORD did for Sarah as he had spoken. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son at the set time God had spoken. Abraham named the child Isaac. When Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him as God commanded. The passage also says Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac was born. Sarah responded with joyful wonder, saying that God had made laughter for her and that others would laugh with her. This account presents Isaac’s birth as a time when God’s word was fulfilled and Abraham obeyed the command he had received. Any explanation of circumcision here should remain brief and respectful, without describing the procedure.
