The Big Idea

When you are tired or upset, pause before making an important choice. Immediate needs matter, but lasting responsibilities matter too.

The Bible Story

Jacob and Esau

Genesis 25:19–34 introduces Isaac and Rebekah’s twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau is born first. As the brothers grow, Esau becomes a skilled hunter who lives in the open country, while Jacob is described as a quiet man who stays among the tents. The passage also describes different parental preferences: Isaac loves Esau because he enjoys Esau’s game, and Rebekah loves Jacob. One day, Jacob is cooking stew when Esau returns exhausted. Esau asks for some of the red stew. Jacob asks Esau to give him his birthright first. Esau agrees, swears an oath, and sells his birthright for bread and lentil stew. Esau’s hunger is not shameful; the passage instead highlights the importance of considering lasting value before making a serious choice. This account ends with the statement that Esau despised his birthright. It does not include the later deception involving Isaac’s blessing.
