The Meal Is Given

Genesis 25:19-34

The Big Idea

When you are tired or upset, pause before making a major choice. Immediate wants can distract us from what is important and lasting.

The Bible Story

Jacob and Esau

Genesis 25:29–34 tells how Jacob cooked stew while Esau returned exhausted from the open country. Esau asked for some of the red stew, and Jacob required him to sell his birthright first. Esau said he was about to die and asked what use the birthright was to him. Jacob asked for an oath, Esau swore to him, and Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. Jacob then gave Esau bread and lentil stew. Esau ate, drank, got up, and went away. The passage concludes that Esau despised his birthright. This account presents a choice between an immediate appetite and something of lasting family importance. It does not make ordinary hunger shameful, and it does not present Jacob’s demand as a model for solving conflict.
