The Bible moment
Genesis 25:19-34 introduces Isaac’s twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau is born first. As the brothers grow, Esau becomes a skilled hunter who spends time in the open country, while Jacob is described as quiet and staying among the tents. Later, Jacob cooks stew. Esau returns exhausted and asks for some of the red stew. Jacob says Esau must first sell him his birthright. Esau responds that he is about to die and asks what use the birthright is to him. Jacob asks him to swear an oath. Esau swears, sells the birthright, and receives bread and lentil stew. The passage concludes that Esau despised his birthright. This account presents a serious choice made when an immediate appetite felt urgent. It does not make hunger shameful, and it does not present Jacob’s demand as a good way to resolve conflict.
