The Bible moment
John 4:1–6 tells us that Jesus left Judea for Galilee and passed through Samaria. Near Sychar, he came to the field Jacob had given to Joseph and sat beside Jacob’s well. Jesus was tired from the journey, and it was about noon. This opening scene prepares for Jesus’ conversation with a Samaritan woman, but this beat focuses only on Jesus resting by the well. The passage does not give another reason for his travel, so no additional motive should be added. The setting includes Samaria, Sychar, the field, and Jacob’s well. This quiet moment shows Jesus experiencing weariness as he travels. It also begins the account of Jesus as the Messiah speaking across a social boundary and teaching about living water and eternal life.
