The Bible Story

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

John 4:16–18 records a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Jesus tells her to call her husband and return. She says that she has no husband. Jesus then tells her that she has had five husbands and that the man she now has is not her husband. She recognizes that Jesus is a prophet. The passage presents Jesus speaking truthfully and openly with her, without recording insults or public humiliation. This moment is part of Jesus’ larger conversation with her about living water, eternal life, worshiping the Father in spirit and truth, and the coming Messiah. The account does not give the woman’s name or explain her relationship history, so those details should remain unstated.
