The Big Idea

Jealousy and deception can cause deep hurt. Reuben’s attempt to help was different from his brothers’ wrongdoing, but Joseph still lost his freedom and Jacob suffered greatly.

The Bible Story

Joseph and His Brothers

Genesis 37:29–35 tells how Reuben returned to the pit and discovered that Joseph was gone. The brothers had sold Joseph to passing Ishmaelites, and they used his garment to deceive Jacob. They dipped the garment in goat’s blood and brought it to him, asking whether it belonged to his son. Jacob recognized it and concluded that a wild animal had killed Joseph. He mourned deeply, tore his clothes, wore sackcloth, and refused comfort. The passage emphasizes the brothers’ deception and Jacob’s grief. It does not say that every brother personally spoke to Jacob, and it does not explain God’s purpose in these events.
