The Bible Story

Joseph Forgives His Brothers

Genesis 43:16–34 describes the brothers’ second visit to Egypt during a famine. Joseph sees Benjamin and orders his steward to prepare a meal at his house. The brothers worry because money had been found in their sacks, but the steward explains that he received their payment. Simeon is brought out, and the brothers bow before Joseph and present their gifts. Joseph asks about their father, Jacob. When he sees Benjamin, Joseph is deeply moved and briefly leaves to weep. Then he returns, and the meal is served at separately arranged tables. At this point, Joseph has not openly identified himself to his brothers. This meeting belongs within the larger account of Joseph recognizing his brothers, testing their honesty and concern for Benjamin, and eventually revealing who he is. Later in the account, Joseph forgives and comforts them and explains that God sent him ahead to preserve life during the famine. The selected scene itself focuses on family tension, hospitality, strong emotion, and an important meeting before the truth is revealed.
