The Bible moment
Genesis 44:14–34 describes the brothers appearing before Joseph after Benjamin is found with Joseph’s silver cup. Judah speaks for the family. He explains that their father, Jacob, is deeply attached to Benjamin and that losing Benjamin would bring great sorrow. Judah also recalls that he promised to be responsible for Benjamin. Instead of allowing Benjamin to remain, Judah offers himself as a servant so Benjamin can return to Jacob. The passage focuses on Judah’s plea, his concern for his father and brother, and his willingness to take Benjamin’s place. Joseph has not yet revealed that he is their brother; that happens later in Genesis 45. The setting is Joseph’s residence in Egypt, and Jacob is not physically present in the room.
