The Bible Story

Manna in the Wilderness

Exodus 16:4-12 records the LORD’s answer to Israel’s hunger and complaints in the wilderness of Sin. He tells Moses that bread will come from heaven each day. The people are to gather a daily portion, with a double portion on the sixth day. This instruction would test whether they would follow Him. Moses and Aaron explain that the people’s complaints are ultimately against the LORD. The LORD also promises meat in the evening and bread in the morning, so Israel will know that He is their God. The passage presents God’s provision as purposeful and measured, not as unlimited food or a promise that every desire will be met. The account continues with quail in the evening and a fine, flaky substance appearing with the morning dew. Moses identifies this food as the bread the LORD has given the people to eat.
