The Bible Story

Manna in the Wilderness

Exodus 16 records how the Israelites came to the wilderness of Sin after leaving Elim and complained to Moses and Aaron because they were hungry. The LORD said He would provide bread from heaven, with a daily gathering and a double portion on the sixth day. In the morning, dew lifted and a fine, flaky food appeared. The Israelites called it manna. They gathered according to each person’s need, and Moses instructed them not to keep it until morning. Before the Sabbath, they gathered twice as much and kept the remainder for the day of rest. An omer of manna was kept as a remembrance for future generations. The Israelites ate manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. This account emphasizes God’s provision, daily dependence, obedience to His instructions, Sabbath rest, and remembering His care.
