The Bible Story

Manna in the Wilderness

Exodus 16:31–36 explains that the Israelites called the food manna. It was fine and flaky, and the passage describes its taste as like wafers made with honey. After God provided manna in the wilderness, Moses commanded that an omer be kept so future generations could see the bread with which the LORD fed Israel. Aaron placed it before the testimony as the LORD commanded. The Israelites ate manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. An omer was one-tenth of an ephah. This memorial helped connect the food with God’s provision and reminded later generations of His care during Israel’s wilderness journey.
