The Bible Story

Manna in the Wilderness

Exodus 16:1–36 tells how the Israelites traveled from Elim to the wilderness of Sin and became hungry. The whole congregation complained to Moses and Aaron, remembering the food they had eaten in Egypt. The LORD told Moses that He would provide meat in the evening and bread from heaven in the morning. He also gave instructions for gathering the daily food and tested whether the people would follow them. In the evening, quail came up and covered the camp. In the morning, dew lay around the camp, and when it lifted, a fine, flaky substance appeared on the ground. The Israelites asked what it was, and Moses explained that it was the bread the LORD had given them. This food was called manna. The account also teaches about gathering according to need, preparing for the Sabbath, and remembering God’s provision.
