Go in Peace

2 Kings 5:1-19

The Big Idea

We can bring difficult questions honestly to God. This passage also reminds us to listen carefully and not add answers the Bible does not give.

The Bible Story

Naaman Is Healed

In 2 Kings 5:17–19, Naaman asks Elisha for earth from Israel. He says he will no longer offer sacrifices to any god except the LORD. Naaman then asks about one difficult matter: when his master enters the temple of Rimmon and Naaman leans on his arm, he wants the LORD to pardon him. The passage does not explain the matter further or tell us what Naaman did later. Elisha answers, “Go in peace.” This scene follows Naaman’s healing in the Jordan River. Earlier, Elisha had instructed Naaman through a messenger to wash seven times. Naaman obeyed and was restored. Afterward, Naaman recognized God’s power in Israel and offered Elisha a gift, but Elisha refused to accept payment.

Naaman speaks with Elisha about his request concerning his master’s temple duties, then receives Elisha’s peaceful farewell. Show the conversation respectfully, perhaps with a small amount of Israelite earth nearby, without resolving or expanding the theological question.

Talk about it

  • What difficult matter did Naaman ask Elisha about?
  • Why is it wise not to add an answer the passage does not give?
