The Bible moment
In 1 Samuel 3:1-3, the boy Samuel served the LORD under Eli. At that time, messages from the LORD were rare, and visions were uncommon. Samuel lay down in the LORD’s temple near the ark of God, while Eli lay down in his own place. This quiet setting comes just before the LORD called Samuel. Samuel did not yet understand who was calling him, but he was present, attentive, and ready to serve. The passage identifies the temple, the ark of God, Samuel’s sleeping place, and Eli’s sleeping place without describing the temple’s exact design. This account begins a significant moment in Samuel’s service to the LORD. It also prepares readers for the way God’s word would be revealed to him and for Samuel’s later recognition as a prophet. The scene should remain calm and respectful, focusing on listening, faithful service, and the nearness of the ark of God rather than inventing architectural details or adding other events.
