The Bible moment
In 1 Kings 3:3-14, Solomon loves the LORD and worships at Gibeon. In a dream, the LORD invites him to ask for what he wants. Solomon does not ask for riches, long life, or the death of enemies. Instead, he asks for an understanding heart so he can govern God’s people and discern good from evil. The LORD is pleased with this request. God grants Solomon exceptional wisdom and also gives him riches and honor. The passage says Solomon will have long life if he walks in God’s ways and keeps the commandments. The focus is not that wisdom guarantees wealth or success, but that Solomon sought discernment for faithful leadership. The LORD’s communication should be shown respectfully without inventing extra words or dream details.

Show Solomon receiving God’s approval because he asked for discernment to lead well instead of asking for riches, long life, or victory over enemies. Symbolic objects such as a crown, treasure chest, and crossed-out weapon may clarify what he did not choose, while a heart or thoughtful expression highlights wisdom.

Use this page to discuss prayer, unselfish requests, discernment, and responsible leadership. Explain that Solomon’s wisdom was for governing God’s people. Present the sword only as a symbolic rejected request, and describe the later judgment sensitively: it was a test, and the living child was not harmed. Avoid suggesting that wisdom automatically brings wealth or success.
