The Bible Story

Solomon Asks for Wisdom

First Kings 3:3–28 tells how Solomon loved the LORD and served as king. At Gibeon, the LORD appeared to him in a dream and invited him to ask for what he wanted. Solomon asked for an understanding heart to govern God’s people and discern good from evil. The LORD was pleased with this unselfish request, gave Solomon exceptional wisdom, and also gave him riches and honor. Solomon later faced a difficult dispute between two women, each claiming the living child. He proposed a test involving a sword, but no harm came to the child. When one woman showed compassion and urged that the child be given to the other, Solomon recognized her as the mother. When all Israel heard about the judgment, the people recognized that God’s wisdom was in Solomon to do justice.
