Solomon Asks for Wisdom

In 1 Kings 3:5-9, the LORD appears to Solomon in a dream at Gibeon and invites him to ask for what he wants. Solomon remembers God’s kindness to David and recognizes his own responsibility as king. He asks for an understanding heart so he can govern God’s people and discern good from evil. Solomon is asking for wisdom to serve others, not for general intelligence or personal advantage. The LORD is pleased with this unselfish request. Later in the passage, God grants Solomon exceptional wisdom and also gives him riches and honor, promising long life if he walks in God’s ways and keeps the commandments.
