The Bible Story

Solomon Asks for Wisdom

First Kings 3:3–28 tells how Solomon loved the LORD and served as king. At Gibeon, the LORD appeared to him in a dream and invited him to ask for what he wanted. Solomon asked for an understanding heart to govern God’s people and discern good from evil. The LORD was pleased and gave him wisdom, along with riches and honor, promising long life if Solomon walked in God’s ways and kept the commandments. Later, two unnamed women came to Solomon’s court. They lived in the same house, each claimed the living child, and one child had died. Their accounts conflicted, with no other witness presented. Solomon ordered that the living child be divided as a test. One woman pleaded that the child be given to the other and not killed; the other agreed to the division. Solomon then ordered the child returned alive to the woman who showed compassion. Israel recognized God’s wisdom in Solomon to do justice.
