The Bible moment
First Kings 3:3–28 tells how Solomon loved the LORD and served as king. At Gibeon, the LORD appeared to him in a dream and invited him to ask for what he wanted. Solomon asked for an understanding heart so he could govern God’s people and discern good from evil. The LORD was pleased with this unselfish request. God gave Solomon exceptional wisdom, along with riches and honor, and promised long life if Solomon walked in God’s ways and kept the commandments. After waking and realizing it was a dream, Solomon came to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant, offered worship, and gave a feast for his servants. Later, his wisdom was recognized through a difficult judgment involving two women and one living child.
