The Bible moment
Exodus 19:1–20:21 tells how Israel camped before Mount Sinai after leaving Egypt. God reminded them that he had rescued them and called them to listen and keep his covenant as his special people. The people agreed to obey. They prepared themselves, and a boundary marked the mountain as holy. On the third day, thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, trumpet sound, smoke, fire, and the shaking mountain showed that God was near. God spoke the Ten Commandments: worship him alone, reject idols, honor his name and Sabbath, honor parents, protect life and marriage, do not steal or lie, and do not covet. The people stood at a distance in fear, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was present.
Look closely
What children can notice
Moses and the people listen reverently at Mount Sinai as God speaks the commandments. A radiant cloud, mountain, and surrounding signs of holiness can frame the scene, while small visual symbols suggest worship, Sabbath rest, truthfulness, respect, and care for others without writing the commandments on tablets.
Talk together
Talk about it
- What did God ask Israel to do?
- How can we show respect for God and others?
