The Bible Story

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 19:21–25 describes God warning Moses that the people must not break through the boundary around Mount Sinai. The priests and people were not to come beyond the boundary, and the mountain was treated as holy. Moses explained that the people could not come up, so God told him to go down and bring Aaron with him. This scene belongs to Israel’s preparation at Sinai, where God was forming them as his special people and teaching them to listen and obey. God’s powerful presence had already been shown through the mountain, cloud, smoke, fire, thunder, lightning, and trumpet sound. The boundary reminded Israel that God is holy and that his instructions should be followed carefully. The passage permits Moses and Aaron to approach, but it does not describe the priests, elders, or people coming beyond the boundary. The account continues with God speaking the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20, but this selected moment focuses on the warning and the authorized approach.
