Bible moment
The Bible moment
Exodus 19:16–20 describes the third day at Sinai. Thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, and a very loud trumpet sound appear, and the people tremble. Moses brings Israel to the foot of the mountain. Sinai is covered with smoke because the Lord descends on it in fire; the mountain shakes, the trumpet grows louder, and Moses goes up when God calls him. This moment follows Israel’s preparation to listen to God and keep his covenant as his special people. The signs show God’s holy presence and power. They do not mean that a person is playing the trumpet. The passage presents Moses as the one who approaches when God calls, while the people remain at a distance. In the wider passage, God speaks the Ten Commandments, calling Israel to worship him alone, honor his name and Sabbath, and treat others rightly.

Read Exodus 19:16–20 with children, then invite them to notice each sensory detail in the picture. Explain that the mountain’s boundary showed respect for God’s holiness. Connect the scene to listening, truthful living, worshiping God, and caring about others. Keep the tone calm rather than frightening, and do not add a human trumpet player or later Sinai events.
