The Bible Story

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 19:9–15 describes God preparing Israel to hear him speak through Moses. God says he will come in a thick cloud so the people can hear and trust Moses. The people wash their clothes and prepare for the third day. A boundary is placed around Mount Sinai, and they are warned not to touch the mountain. This boundary marks the mountain as holy and teaches the people to follow God’s instructions respectfully. The people had already promised to do what God said. The passage also includes an adult-specific preparation instruction; for young children, it is appropriate to focus on clean clothing, readiness, listening, and reverence. The scene should not show anyone crossing the boundary, touching the mountain, or climbing it. The wider account continues with powerful signs as God comes near and speaks the Ten Commandments, but this illustration focuses on the earlier preparation and boundary.
