Bible moment
The Bible moment
Exodus 19:1–2 says that Israel arrived in the Wilderness of Sinai in the third month after leaving Egypt and camped in front of Mount Sinai. Moses and the people are gathered at the place where God will speak to them. This moment begins the events in which God prepares Israel to be his special people. The mountain is important, but the commandments have not yet been spoken in this scene. The people are waiting at their camp, following Moses as God leads them. The passage presents Israel’s arrival plainly: they travel to Sinai, settle there, and camp before the mountain. This setting introduces God’s covenant with Israel and their call to obedience and holiness, while keeping this particular picture focused on the beginning of the story.
