Bible story
Jacob Wrestles at Peniel
Genesis 32:22-32
Jacob sends his family and possessions across the Jabbok, remains alone, and wrestles with a man until daybreak. The man touches Jacob’s hip, leaving it out of joint. Jacob asks for a blessing and receives the name Israel because he has striven with God and with humans and has prevailed. Jacob names the place Peniel because he says he has seen God face to face and lived. The account ends with Jacob limping and notes the Israelites’ abstention from the tendon attached to the hip socket.
