Bible story
Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
John 13:1-20
Before the Passover feast, Jesus knows that his hour has come, that he is returning to the Father, and that the Father has given all things into his hands. During supper, he rises, lays aside his outer garments, ties a towel around himself, pours water into a basin, and washes and dries the disciples’ feet. Peter questions and initially refuses, but Jesus tells him that without being washed he has no share with him; Peter then asks for his hands and head as well. Jesus says that the disciples are clean, but not all of them, because he knows who will betray him. After washing their feet, Jesus teaches that, although he is their Lord and Teacher, they should wash one another’s feet and follow his example of humble service. He says they are blessed if they know and do these things. He then speaks of Scripture being fulfilled, tells them beforehand so that they may believe when it happens, and teaches that receiving one whom he sends is receiving him and the One who sent him.
