Bible story
Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams
Genesis 40:1–41:57
Joseph, imprisoned in Egypt, interprets the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker, attributing the interpretation to God. Two years later, Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s two dreams as seven years of great abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. He advises Pharaoh to appoint a wise administrator and store one-fifth of the harvest during the abundant years. Pharaoh recognizes Joseph’s God-given wisdom, places him over Egypt, and Joseph oversees the collection and storage of grain. When famine comes, people from Egypt and other lands come to Joseph to buy food.
