New Testament · John 2:13-22

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

During Passover, Jesus goes up to Jerusalem and finds sellers of oxen, sheep, and doves, along with money changers, in the temple. He makes a whip of cords, drives the sheep and oxen out, pours out the money changers’ coins, overturns their tables, and tells the dove sellers to take these things away. He says, “Do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remember, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” Jewish leaders ask for a sign. Jesus says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” referring to the temple of his body. After he is raised from the dead, his disciples remember and believe the Scripture and Jesus’ word.
