New Testament · Mark 2:1-12

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

In Mark 2:1-12, Jesus returns to Capernaum. News spreads that he is at home, and many gather so that there is no room, even outside the door. Four people bring a paralyzed man and lower him through the opened roof. Seeing their faith, Jesus first tells the man that his sins are forgiven. Some scribes question this in their hearts, reasoning that only God can forgive sins. Jesus knows their thoughts, asks which is easier—to say that sins are forgiven or to say, “Get up, take your mat and walk”—and declares that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. He then commands the man to get up, take his mat, and go home. The man immediately rises, takes his mat, and walks out in full view of everyone. The crowd is amazed, praises God, and says they have never seen anything like this.
