Paul and Silas Sing in Prison

In Philippi, Paul and Silas are beaten and imprisoned after Paul commands a spirit to leave a slave girl. At midnight they pray and sing hymns while the prisoners listen. An earthquake opens the prison doors and loosens the prisoners’ bonds. The jailer fears the prisoners have escaped, but Paul stops him. The jailer asks how to be saved, and he and his household believe and are baptized. He washes Paul and Silas’s wounds and shares a meal with them. The next day, the magistrates order their release; Paul identifies their Roman citizenship and points out that they were publicly beaten and imprisoned without a public trial. The magistrates come, apologize, and escort them out. After encouraging the believers at Lydia’s house, Paul and Silas leave the city.
