The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Jesus tells a parable about a father and his two sons. The younger son asks for his share of the father’s property, leaves home, wastes it in reckless living, and becomes needy during a famine. He returns intending to confess and ask to be treated as a hired servant, but his father welcomes him with compassion and celebration. The older son resents the celebration, and the father explains that rejoicing is right because his lost brother has returned.
