New Testament · Matthew 17:1-13

The Transfiguration

After six days, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. Jesus is transfigured before them: his face shines like the sun and his clothes become white as light. Moses and Elijah appear and speak with him. Peter offers to make three shelters, but a bright cloud overshadows them. A voice from the cloud identifies Jesus as God’s beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased, and commands the disciples to listen to him. The disciples fall facedown in fear. Jesus touches them, tells them not to be afraid, and they see no one except Jesus. As they descend, Jesus tells them not to tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. The disciples ask about Elijah, and Jesus says Elijah is coming and will restore all things, but that Elijah has already come and was not recognized and was treated as people wished. The disciples understand that Jesus is speaking about John the Baptist.
