The Bible Story

Abraham Welcomes Three Visitors

Genesis 18:9-10 records the visitors asking Abraham where Sarah is. Abraham answers that she is in the tent. One visitor then announces that he will return at the appointed time, “at this time next year,” and Sarah will have a son. The passage does not identify which visitor speaks, so the announcement should not be assigned to a named person. This moment follows Abraham’s welcome and hospitality: he offered water, rest, and food to the visitors. The promise is presented clearly and positively. The surrounding passage explains that Abraham and Sarah were old, and Sarah listened at the tent entrance. Her inward laughter showed surprise or doubt about the promise. Later in the passage, the LORD asks about her laughter and declares that nothing is too difficult for the LORD. This page focuses only on the promise at the tent and should not add the child’s birth or later events.

For families, church, and class

Use this page

Read Genesis 18:9-10 before showing the illustration. Invite children to notice Abraham’s welcoming posture, Sarah listening at the tent entrance, and the three visitors. Explain that the announcement belongs to the passage, but Scripture does not identify which visitor spoke. Keep discussion centered on God’s faithfulness and the stated promise; do not imply that the birth is shown.
