The Bible Story

The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2:1–7 tells how Caesar Augustus ordered a registration, so people traveled to their own towns to be recorded. Joseph went from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s town, because he belonged to David’s family line. Mary, who was pledged to Joseph and pregnant, went with him. While they were in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger because there was no available guest space for them. Luke’s account presents Jesus’ birth simply and respectfully. The passage identifies Bethlehem, the manger, and the cloths, but it does not identify an innkeeper or a stable, and it does not mention animals at the manger.
