The Bible Story

The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2:13–14 describes what happened after an angel announced Jesus’ birth to shepherds living in the fields and guarding their flock at night. A multitude of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and declaring glory to God and peace on earth among those with whom he is pleased. This heavenly praise belongs to the larger account of Jesus’ birth: Mary gave birth to her firstborn son in Bethlehem, wrapped him in cloths, and laid him in a manger because there was no available guest space. The shepherds later went to Bethlehem, found Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, and shared what they had been told.
