God Hears His People

Exodus 3:1–4:17

The Big Idea

God sees, hears, and knows when people suffer. He can call us to help, and he gives help for what he asks us to do.

The Bible Story

Moses and the Burning Bush

In Exodus 3:7–10, the LORD tells Moses that he has seen the misery of his people in Egypt, heard their cries, and knows their suffering. The LORD says he has come down to rescue the Israelites and bring them to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey. He sends Moses to Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. This is a call and promise, not a picture of the rescue already finished. The passage shows God’s compassion and attention to his people. Moses is being asked to obey even though the task is difficult. The LORD speaks from the burning bush, while the LORD’s message identifies the Israelites, Pharaoh, Egypt, and the promised land. Keep the suffering age-appropriate and non-graphic, focusing on God hearing and helping his people.

For families, church, and class

Use this page

Use this page before or after reading Exodus 3:7–10. Invite children to notice God’s compassion, Moses’ listening, and the difference between a promise of rescue and rescue already completed. Pair the image with prayer for people who are suffering, using gentle, non-graphic language. Encourage children to discuss ways they can listen, obey, and help others. Keep the burning bush respectful and avoid portraying the LORD as a human figure.
