The Bible Story

The Miraculous Catch of Fish

Luke 5:1-11 tells how Jesus taught people beside the Lake of Gennesaret from Simon’s boat. Later, Jesus told Simon to go into deep water and lower the nets. Although Simon and the fishermen had worked all night without catching anything, he followed Jesus’ direction. The nets then filled with so many fish that they needed help from another boat. Both boats became heavily filled. When Simon saw what happened, he fell at Jesus’ knees and asked Jesus to go away, saying that he was a sinful man. Simon and everyone with him were astonished, including James and John. Jesus told Simon not to be afraid and said that from then on he would catch people. The passage presents Simon’s awe and humility, while keeping his words about himself simple and unexplained.
