The Bible Story

The Crucifixion of Jesus

Luke 23:44–45 records that from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, darkness covered the land. Luke also says that the curtain of the temple was torn in two. These are the events presented in this beat. The passage does not explain the cause of the darkness, and it does not describe how the curtain was made. For a child-friendly presentation, show the darkened land and torn curtain simply and carefully. This scene belongs within Luke’s account of Jesus’ crucifixion and death. It should be handled reverently, using symbolic, non-graphic imagery and staying with what Luke records.
