The Bible moment
Luke 23:26 says that as Jesus was led away, Simon of Cyrene was seized and made to carry the cross behind Jesus. Luke identifies Simon by his city, Cyrene, but does not tell us about his family, occupation, or any prior relationship with Jesus. This moment occurs as Jesus is being led from Jerusalem toward the place of crucifixion. The passage later describes a crowd following, including women who mourned and lamented. Luke’s account continues with Jesus’ crucifixion, his words to those around him, two criminals crucified beside him, darkness over the land from the sixth to the ninth hour, and Jesus’ death. This page focuses only on Simon’s assigned task and does not suggest that he carried the cross all the way. The scene should remain reverent and free from graphic details.
