The Bible Story

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel 6:19-23 describes what happened at daybreak after Daniel spent the night in the lions’ den. King Darius hurried to the den and called out to Daniel. Daniel answered that God had sent an angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so they had not hurt him. Daniel was brought out, and no injury was found on him because he trusted in his God. The passage presents God’s protection as the reason Daniel was safe. The angel’s action should not be expanded beyond what the passage reports. The scene includes the den, the stone at its entrance, Daniel, Darius, the lions, and the angel. It should communicate relief and God’s sovereignty without adding prayer words or dialogue not supplied by the source.
