Bible moment
The Bible moment
In 1 Samuel 17:41-47, Goliath approaches David and mocks him. David answers that Goliath comes with a sword, spear, and javelin, but David comes in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel’s armies. David explains that the LORD will give victory so that Israel will know that the LORD saves without sword or spear. This moment belongs to the larger account of Israel and the Philistines facing one another in the Valley of Elah. Goliath has challenged Israel, and Saul and the Israelites are afraid. David, the youngest son of Jesse, has come to check on his brothers. He trusts that the LORD who delivered him before will deliver him again. The passage presents David’s courage as dependence on the LORD, not confidence in human strength or weapons.
